December 2007
Dick,
Kolton and I went turkey hunting over Thanksgiving weekend in Bassett. I tell you it is the single most enjoyment in my life and I owe it all to you.
He saved up his own money, bothering his mother to earn money by doing chores around the house. I took him out and he picked out a 20 gauge single shot.
On Thanksgiving day Bill and I took him out north to look and did not see any but did let him practice two shots. On Friday we went out to the old McFaddin place on BJ Keller's but turkeys were not working with us. We went out north on Stolsparks and set in blind, did some calling but no response.
Went for a walk down the canyon when I saw some 50 or so away. We put the sneak on and with just a couple purs I asked Kolton if he could see them and his reply was, "They are coming right for us, Dad." I said, "Get your gun up and take the one you want."
One shot and the young man had his first ever bird. Awesome. The joy was indescribable. Thank you for inspiring me to take my children hunting and fishing. You are one of a kind.
